As expected any significant phenomenon of Japanese history and culture, the history of these cats begins with an ancient and beautiful legend.
According to legend, the appearance and evolution of this breed of cats is closely linked to the legendary family Takeda, one of the most famous and important in the history of Japan's feudal families. Especially for those of our readers who took little interest of medieval Japanese history, it is worth briefly explain some of the nuances that are directly related to that legend. The fact is that faithfulness to the 9th century Japanese emperors, non-monogamy requirements, led to the fact that too much of the imperial offspring appeared in Japan, which, formally, could claim the throne. This gave rise to two problems. First death of the Emperor caused all the classic medieval war for the throne, ruining the country. Secondly, the Crown Prince and the yard had the right to maintenance from the treasury that ravaged the country and without any wars. To reduce pressure on the treasury, the emperor Saga adopted the law, according to which the emperor could decide for yourself which one of his descendants is considered a prince, and who immediately translated into the category of citizens who do not have any rights to the imperial throne.

And they did not become princes - daimyo owning
provinces and lived on the income from them, but just the nobles,
forced to earn a living by engaging in the service. Subsequently,
many of these princes became the founders of the well-known noble
families, united under the name Minamoto. In the 12th century during
a brutal and bloody civil war, war, childbirth Minamoto managed to
oust pretty tribal aristocracy, raise the status of samurai and
deprive emperors real power transferring its military rulers -
shoguns. As you might guess Shogun usually became just the
representatives of the Minamoto. This war was the basis for the most
famous Japanese historical epic "The Tale of the Heike" and
many legends, instructive stories, parables, anecdotes and frank.
So, during this same war, for a long time,
Minamoto lost. So much so that most of the Minomoto birth were
destroyed, and those who survived were forced to flee. Among them was
one of the founders of the kind of Takeda - Samurai Satake Yoshinobu.
Legend has it that ambushed and miraculously escaping from it, Satake
Yoshinobu was forced to wade to his native province of Kai alone,
country roads, sleeping in abandoned villages and ravaged by war. It
was winter and the brave samurai was forced to fight the terrible
opponents - cold and hunger. .
According
to legend, once again arrange for the night on the bare floor in
dilapidated house, he decided to interrupt their misery and do
suicide. However, he was so exhausted that he could not properly
compress the knife with your fingers. Crashing to the floor and lay
in waiting for a painful death, proud samurai begged all-saving
Amita Buddha mercifully interrupt request his suffering. His prayer
was answered. Suddenly Samurai felt the heat from his container of
the soul - the abdomen. Looking down, the moonlight, he saw an
amazing creature - very fat cat, covered with very short hair and
short, all in the palm of a long, tail. Clutching Yoshinobu she
warmed him with its warmth and soothed his mind his purring.
Moreover, during the night, stroking the animal Samurai warmed his
hands and, in the morning, full of gratitude for the fact that his
prayers were heard, all was already decided to rip his stomach, but
drew attention to the fact that the cat does not go away, as it
were, calling him for it is poking at his feet, then stepping to the
door, looking back at him. The cat was a tricolor, which in Japan is
considered a symbol of good luck and good omen. Yoshinobu decided to
trust fate and followed it is important to transship their feet
thick animal. Cat led samurai to ashes remaining from the big rich
house, and slipped into a small hole, which proved to be the
entrance to the cellar. In the cellar, by some miracle, not ravaged
and destroyed by the wild beasts were enough supplies to recover and
survive the winter. Happy decent samurai cultivated in the family
martial art of Daito-Ryu Aiki-jutsu, and meditated and slept at
night, thanks to the warming does not leave his thick cat.
When the spring Yoshinobu again hit the road, he took the cat with
him, and with it arrived in his native province. Since then,
futon-neko "cat bed," as they were called at the time,
became a kind of mascot kind of Takeda. Thick, flat snouts and
short, with a maximum of palm long tails, almost bald (except for
very short fur, but rather undercoat) and always calico cat (or
streaked if cats) they are accompanied by the samurai kind of Takeda
in their campaigns and battles They lived in their castles and homes
and were sleeping in their beds.
It is worth noting that these cats were not very common, they were
expensive and not everyone could afford a samurai purebred
futon-neko. In short, these cats have been popular, but it was very
few. Whether the genetic line of these cats was not very strong, and
all kittens inherit both attributes, being born small, whether
Takeda clan deliberately limited their spread, wanting to be the
exclusive owners of these animals, however, this breed elitism has
served a disservice. The 20th ruler of the famous family, Takeda
Katsueri luck changed. In the long war with their rivals he was
defeated. In 1582, two of the enemy of the Takeda - Oda Nobunaga and
Tokugawa Ieyasu defeated the Takeda troops seized and destroyed the
central province of sorts - Kai and almost completely physically
destroyed Takeda supporters and members of the family. Katsuyuri
himself and his family members have committed seppuku. Only thanks
to the fact that one of the family members - Takeda Kunitsugu,
shortly before the attack on the Kai moved to another province -
story kind of Takeda continued. But alas, no bedding cats. The fire
destroyed the political power of the Takeda war disappeared and
futon-neko.
Takeda
Kanetsugu, devoted his life to the improvement of Aiki-jutsu and
considered it his duty to preserve this art as the main legacy of
the Takeda family. Why in this case he was not able to keep and
legendary breed of cats? History and legend are silent on this.
Whether Kanitsugu have not had enough time to work on improving the
breed, whether he did not have a sufficient number of dogs and cats
in order to preserve the breed - Guess you can build infinite. Most
likely the newly formed chapter of sorts, forced to fight
desperately for survival family residues, was simply not up to the
cats.
From the point
of view of all these Japanese (and not only Japanese) of cat lovers,
the disappearance of a futon-neko, of course is a real tragedy.
These cats have become a true legend like "Bigfoot" or the
Loch Ness monster. Year does not pass, that from what may be the
Japanese province not report came about that somewhere in a remote
village showed genuine futon-neko. Usually it turns out that it's
just unfortunate obese animals, whose owners bad watching their
favorite meals. So much so, that some historians have called into
question the very fact that the "brush-Japanese bobtail"
(is the official name given to this hypothetical species), ever
existed at all. And really - in the "serious" historical
chronicles and documents of these cats are not mentioned. And
legends considered trustworthy historical sources very difficult. On
the other hand - if the description of the place full of dramatic
events Takeda family history left many cats and animals in general?
How many documents were saved from blazing castles and monasteries?
A separate point of view held by some felinologists, assume that the
kind of Takeda did not have some kind of a unique breed of cat. Just
the memory of a beautiful legend Takeda sought and taken appropriate
redeemed by the description on the cats from the legend of
conventional mutations Japanese Bobtail. Especially suspicious
researchers have even suggested that most of the "futon-neko"
really were cropped, beefy cats with cropped "by hand"
tails.
Yet suppose that the legendary "Bed-cat" really existed. What was she like? What is different from Japanese Bobtail? According to the accepted among breeders working on breeding of this breed standard based on the references of these cats in the traditions and legends, it should be a cat with the following attributes:

It is difficult
to answer today to the question of whether the medieval Japan could
boast such wonderful animals. Hopefully, yes. One way or another for
decades by Japanese breeders and geneticists conducted a thorough
work on the breeding of cats it. And, knowing the tenacity and talent
of the Japanese, there is no doubt. Even if belonging to the Takeda
clan futon-neko no more than a legend, the legend will soon be
personally meow at exhibitions and in the homes of lovers of cats.
